Bethune

Béthune is built on a modest 42 metre high promontory, the last swell of the Artois hills to the south. To the north of the town, the “Béthune lowlands” marks the start of the extensive plain of Flanders.

After 90% of the town was destroyed in 1918, the centre was rebuilt between 1920 and 1927. It is only their gables that the eclectic and art Deco houses around the Grand’Place have in common.

As a reward for the people of Béthune for their loyalty to the crown of France, the Belfry is the last sign of the city’s history, and is listed as a historic monument and a UNESCO world heritage site. It is the equivalent of the lord’s keep and symbolises the acquisition of the town’s freedom and its citizens’ rights.

Today its 35 bells still mark the passing of time in the rhythm of daily life for the people of Béthune, with one of the most beautiful chimes in the region.
